Athens music, circa 1986

A little piece of history here, a documentary of Athens music made in 1986, the time of REM's come-uppance. Not everyone in it's recognizable of course, and it seems to have a little bit of "making of" in it that's not from 1986, but still kinda cool to see some of this shizzy. Is that a young Mr. Weaver of Weaver D's I see in there?

(Embedded the video for easier viewing. If you don't know how to do that, let me know and I'll show you.)

Sometimes I guess it's pretty easy to overlook the vibrant cultural history this city has fostered over the past several decades. Sure, nearly everyone with any sort of knowledge of music history could point out the obvious association between the city of Athens and such famous musical acts as R.E.M. and the B-52s, but from my experience being a student here for the past 3 1/2 years, I can honestly say that those very associations have grown so commonplace that every time I am reminded of them I can't help but sigh...but seeing this video, especially with actual footage taken from the time during which these bands were first reaching their prime, really worked to help me take on a greater sense of appreciation for what these individuals were able to accomplish. Maybe I've just been a little too hard on good old Athens lately. Nice clip...
