Today's Guest Speaker, and bringing this to UGA
I was looking over the Web site from our guest speaker today, the Tennessee Journalist, and I am interested to see what we could do with a Web site like that here at UGA. While the Red & Black may see the site as competition, I don't think the paper has a lot to worry about. For one thing, the Red & Black pays for most of their content, except for the opinions section. The student-run Web site would be a volunteer effort. One conflict I do forsee is that when you work at the Red & Black you sign an agreement that you will not work for any other publications. Would this Web site be considered such a publication--that we would have to choose between the two?

That's definitely an interesting point you bring up about the Red & Black not allowing those individuals currently employed at the paper to work for other publications. I'm sure this would extend to the web as well, particularly if the site in question deals with local news and issues. But nonetheless, the adoption of this technology really would be a great opportunity for the rest of the student body to get involved in all aspects of journalism. Between the journalism department, the Tele Arts majors, and the Broadcast News majors, along with the contributions of other students from various fields of study, I think we have enough experience to bring such a site to reality. Even though I'm graduating in May, this opportunity is pretty exciting and if we can actually get this thing into motion, we could provide future students a great alternative to working for the Red & Black...
I think I should clarify that The Red & Black doesn't allow its employees to work for competing publications. This would mean no working for the Athens Banner-Herald, and in some extreme cases, the Associated Press. You have every right to work for any sort of magazine publication, because as a newspaper, we do not compete for readership.
On another note, The Red & Black does not pay for online content whatsoever. Hopefully this will change soon.
